I have long admired Brown Sheep Company, first discovering their yarns as a teenager growing up in Colorado. Their commitment to American wool, quality craftsmanship, and natural fibers left a lasting impression on me and helped shape my appreciation for thoughtfully made yarn.

For that reason, it feels especially meaningful to be working with Brown Sheep Company on a pattern that took years to create.

The Lucy Claire Bag is knit in Brown Sheep Company's Harborside Aran, a newer yarn line crafted from a blend of 50% Rambouillet and 50% Columbia wool. I was fortunate to discover this yarn during the development of the pattern, as the combination of these two sheep breeds fulls beautifully into an exceptionally dense and durable felted fabric.

That quality is essential to the Lucy Claire design. After the fulling process, the fabric develops the structure needed to support the generous size of the bag while maintaining its sculptural silhouette and soft, organic lines. The result is a fabric that feels substantial, durable, and made to last.

One of the qualities I appreciate most about fulled wool is its natural resistance to moisture. The dense felted fabric creates a practical barrier against the elements, making the bag well suited for everyday use in all seasons. Having carried felted wool bags for years, I know from experience that being caught in a rainstorm—or even a blizzard—does not mean the contents inside your bag will end up wet.

Harborside Aran made it possible to create exactly the fabric I envisioned for Lucy Claire: heirloom-quality, naturally durable, beautifully sculptural, and designed to be used and enjoyed for years to come.
